Shrew is a small predator that brings not only benefits, but also harm. In search of food, the beast digs many underground passages, thereby damaging the roots of garden crops and leading to the death of the latter. To preserve the harvest, you can use different methods of dealing with the underground mouse.
The use of poisons
One of the effective methods of extermination of rodents is the use of poisons of chemical origin. These include:
- Hunter anti-rodent;
Before removing the shrew from the site using these toxic agents, it is necessary to study the instructions. A prerequisite when working with drugs is the observance of precautionary measures, since poison can harm human and animal health.
All chemicals must be used only at the dose recommended by the manufacturer. Put the selected poison in each hole and leave it at the entrance. When working with chemicals, wear a mask and gloves to protect your respiratory system and hands.
Repellers and traps
For the extermination of the pest, various mechanical traps-traps and electronic type repellers can be used. The latter form low-frequency radio waves of 400 Hz with a radius of 20 m, which are unpleasant for rodents. Devices need to be immersed in the ground over the entire area of the site.
Shrews will quickly respond to noise and leave the habitable territory. Such repellers are also effective against snakes, moles.
An effective means for catching rodents is the reusable SuperCat device. To install the trap, it is necessary to dig a hole with a diameter of about 6 cm, place the device in the recess and pull the spring-loaded handle of the gripping mechanism to the limit. When the trap works, it will be visible above the surface: the handle will go back into the trap. The device works regardless of which side the pest gets into it.
For catching shrews, live-trap traps are also used. They act as follows: a pipe of the required diameter and length is inserted into the rodent, which is equipped on both sides with shutters that open only inside the pipe. The shrew, moving along its nose, opens the flap, advances into the pipe and abuts against the opposite wing. The pest will not be able to get out of the trap on its own.
A wire trap is used to catch the shrews. It is required to install a spacer at the hole in the underground passage. As soon as the pest touches it, the locking mechanism will work.
There are folk methods of exterminating the shrew, which are temporary. Underground mice can be bred using:
- Pouring burrows with water. In each stroke it is necessary to lower the hose and leave it with water turned on until the liquid begins to overflow over the edge.
- Deep digging. Rodents will be left without shelter and will leave the excavated area to search for another habitat.
- Fighting off odor. Underground mice have a good sense of smell and do not tolerate the smell of rotten fish. Therefore, to scare them away, it is recommended to spread pieces of rotten fish throughout the entire area, deepening them in holes. Feeling an unpleasant smell, shrews will begin to leave the habitable territory. Instead of fish, kerosene or ammonia can be used. Material moistened with any of these solutions must be put into the burrows of rodents.
- Barrier settings. For this purpose, it is required to place a fine mesh (metal or plastic) around the entire perimeter of the site by digging it to a depth of 120 cm. It is recommended to leave 10 cm of mesh on the surface. This barrier blocks all underground passages for the pest.
In addition, marigolds are suitable for fighting rodents. It is necessary to dry the plant, finely grind and scatter over the land before digging. The shrew scares off the smell of this crop. It can be planted along the edges of the garden so that pests do not enter it.
